The neuraminidase (NA) glycoprotein of influenza virus plays a critical role in the release of progeny viruses and their spread, making it an important target for antiviral drugs. This chapter provides an overview of the structure and function of NA and of four NA inhibitors-zanamivir, oseltamivir, peramivir, and laninamivir-that are widely used for the treatment and prophylaxis of influenza A and B viral infections. The importance of monitoring the emergence and global spread of NA inhibitor-resistant viruses is also discussed.
