Abstract:
Cryopreservation, for long-term storage in germplasm banks, at liquid nitrogen temperatures (-196°C), of plant material, somatic cells or embryogenic lines, allows them to conserve their genetic integrity, since when the material is frozen, they stop all their metabolism, remaining alive, but in suspension. Cryopreservation of woody species has been in use for a short time, but this technique facilitates conservation by lowering costs, time spent in storage, and avoiding contamination). On the other hand, the Cordia alliodora species Ruiz & Pavón is of economic and ecological importance, due to its precious wood and because it is a fast-growing tree in humid climates and has great potential for productive forest plantations, contributing to the local and national economy. The proposed method for cryopreserving plant material from wood-yielding species is vitrification. This involves transforming the liquid solution in a cell into a glassy state, without forming crystals. Therefore, the objective of this work is to present a methodology for cryopreserving plant tissue from Cordia alliodora species Ruiz & Pavón using vitrification.
