Ethics in Research01:56

Ethics in Research

23.7K
Today, scientists agree that good research is ethical in nature and is guided by a basic respect for human dignity and safety. However, this has not always been the case. Modern researchers must demonstrate that the research they perform is ethically sound.

Nursing Evaluation01:15

Nursing Evaluation

4.1K
The evaluation stage signals the end of the nursing process. The nurse gathers evaluative data to assess whether or not the patient has attained the expected results. Whereas the nurse collects data in the nursing assessment to identify the patient's health concerns, the evaluation stage data determines if the indicated health issues are resolved. Evaluative data collection includes two sections: the data acquired to evaluate patient outcomes and the time criteria for data collection.

Clinical Trials01:16

Clinical Trials

8.5K
Clinical trials are prospective experimental studies conducted on humans to determine the safety and efficacy of treatments, drugs, diet methods, and medical devices. Using statistics in clinical trials enables researchers to derive reasonable and accurate conclusions from the collected data, allowing them to make wise decisions in uncertain situations. In medical research, statistical methods are crucial for preventing errors and bias.
There are four phases in a clinical trial. A phase one...

Cross-Sectional Research01:50

Cross-Sectional Research

11.5K
In cross-sectional research, a researcher compares multiple segments of the population at the same time. If they were interested in people's dietary habits, the researcher might directly compare different groups of people by age. Instead of following a group of people for 20 years to see how their dietary habits changed from decade to decade, the researcher would study a group of 20-year-old individuals and compare them to a group of 30-year-old individuals and a group of 40-year-old...

Nursing Ethical Principles II01:27

Nursing Ethical Principles II

2.3K
Ethical principles are essential in guiding nurses to fulfill their responsibilities, focusing on the quality of nursing care and decision-making. These principles, including autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, justice, and fidelity, shape the ethical framework within healthcare settings.
Consider the following scenario, which illustrates how these principles are applied in the care of Mr. John, a fifty-year-old teacher diagnosed with metastatic liver cancer.
Initially, Mr. John's...

Accountability and Responsibility of a Nurse II01:09

Accountability and Responsibility of a Nurse II

1.2K
Professional accountability in nursing is a multifaceted concept that encompasses professional ethics, legal standards, and employment expectations. This framework ensures that nurses maintain and elevate the quality of care while upholding the values of their profession. It compels them to treat patients, families, and colleagues with respect, compassion, and integrity.
For example, a nurse demonstrating respect and compassion might listen attentively to a patient's concerns, provide...

Area of Science:

  • Clinical Research
  • Health Workforce Development
  • Human Resources for Health

Background:

  • The Philippines possesses substantial potential to become a leading clinical trial hub.
  • A significant challenge identified is the shortage of skilled clinical research professionals (CRPs).
  • Existing research assessed CRP competencies in Thailand, Vietnam, Congo, and the Philippines in 2022.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the self-assessed competencies of Filipino CRPs.
  • To identify specific training needs among Filipino CRPs.
  • To evaluate the relevance of Joint Task Force for Clinical Trial Competency (JTF) framework domains to CRP roles.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among Filipino CRPs from March to April 2022.
  • Participants self-assessed their competency and training needs based on the JTF framework.
  • Investigator skills in community engagement and research grant application were also assessed.

Main Results:

  • 175 Filipino CRPs participated, rating themselves as skilled but not advanced across all domains.
  • Lowest confidence was reported in study management, investigational product development/regulation, and data management.
  • Highest confidence was observed in ethical considerations, professionalism, and communication; investigators rated research design lowest.

Conclusions:

  • The study provides a comprehensive self-assessment of Filipino CRP competencies using the JTF framework.
  • Key areas for capacity building include operational and regulatory competencies.
  • Findings should be interpreted cautiously due to non-probability sampling and self-assessment reliance.
