Grant Funding Program Supports Increasing School Meals

Objective:
To estimate the effect of grant funding up to $5,000 for kitchen and dining equipment on the number of meals served in Missouri schools.
Methods:
School districts that received grants (n = 71) were compared with districts that did not (n = 367) using state department data from 2016 to 2022. This quasi-experimental natural experiment used a staggered difference-in-differences estimation to compare the aggregated group-specific treatment effects of grants on meal claims from pregrant to postgrant years.
Results:
Receiving a grant during the treatment period was associated with an increase of 37.0 annual meal claims per student (95% confidence interval, 23.3-50.8; P < 0.001) compared with unawarded districts. This estimate corresponds to a statewide increase of roughly 4,696,299 meals during the years of the study, with each increased meal associated with < $0.07 of funding.
Conclusions And Implications:
Future research could expand on these findings using more robust methods and sampling.
