This study found no significant link between age, gender, and voice handicap in Lebanese patients with hoarseness. The Voice Handicap Index-10 scores were similar across different age groups and between males and females.
Area of Science:
- Otolaryngology
- Speech and Hearing Sciences
- Quality of Life Research
Background:
- Hoarseness is a common complaint affecting quality of life.
- Understanding demographic factors influencing voice handicap is crucial for patient care.
- The Voice Handicap Index-10 (VHI-10) is a validated tool for assessing self-perceived voice handicap.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the correlation between age, gender, and self-perceived voice handicap in Lebanese patients with hoarseness.
- To analyze the impact of demographic and socioeconomic factors on voice handicap.
- To provide insights into the patient experience of hoarseness in a tertiary referral center.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective chart review of patients presenting with hoarseness.
- Inclusion of demographic data: age, gender, smoking, reflux, allergy, voice abuse, endocrine disorders, voice diagnosis, marital status, occupation, and education.
- Administration of the Voice Handicap Index-10 (VHI-10) questionnaire to assess perceived voice handicap.
Main Results:
- A cohort of 177 patients (87 males, 90 females) with a mean age of 51.33 years was analyzed.
- The most common diagnoses were Reinke's edema, vocal fold polyp, and vocal fold leukoplakia.
- No statistically significant differences in VHI-10 scores were found between genders or across age groups (below/above 60 and 70 years).
- Linear regression analysis revealed no significant association between age or gender and VHI-10 scores, even after adjusting for confounding factors.
Conclusions:
- Age and gender do not significantly correlate with the self-perceived voice handicap in Lebanese patients presenting with hoarseness.
- Socioeconomic factors like occupation and education did not significantly influence the relationship between age, gender, and voice handicap.
- These findings suggest that other factors may play a more prominent role in the experience of voice handicap among patients with hoarseness.
