Comparison of Sealing Ability of Biodentine, Biostructure Mineral Trioxide Aggregate, Theracal LC, and Bio-C Repair

Aim And Background:
One of the endodontic errors that might happen during a root canal procedure is perforation in the furcation area. To prevent bacterial contamination, it should be repaired as quickly as possible with a biocompatible material. The study sought to assess and also compared the ability of the materials, i.e., Biodentine, Biostructure Mineral Trioxide Aggregate, Theracal LC, and Bio-C Repair, to seal the perforation in permanent molars as materials of choice for perforation repair.
Materials And Methods:
In the present study, 65 samples were made ready using Rhodamine B dye and distributed into five groups of thirteen samples each: group I (perforations left unsealed, i.e., positive control), group II (perforations sealed using Biodentine), and group III [perforations repaired with Biostructure mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA)]. In group IV, Theracal LC was used to seal the perforations. Similarly, in group V, Bio-C Repair was applied to repair the perforation. Samples were observed in an Inverted Laser Scanning Confocal Microscope. The degree of the penetration of the dye was estimated in mm (millimeters) with the help of the Software IMAGE J. Data obtained were subjected to Post hoc Tukey's test and One-way Analysis of variance test.
Results:
The mean depth in regard to penetration was found to be maximum in group I, then group V, and minimum in group II. Overall, there was a statistically significant difference (p < 0.001) among the mean depth of penetration of all five study groups.
Conclusion:
Biodentine, Biostructure MTA, Theracal LC, and Bio-C Repair showed microleakage, while Biodentine showed the least marginal leakage amongst all, and Bio-C Repair exhibited the highest microleakage.
Clinical Significance:
In order to seal and manage furcation perforation effectively, this study will educate dentists on how to choose and apply the best perforation repair material to achieve a good prognosis.
