Specific Overuse Injuries in Professional Athletes

Abstract:
Overuse injuries are a major cause of pain, performance decline, and time loss in professional athletes. Unlike acute traumatic injuries, these conditions develop gradually because of repetitive submaximal loading and inadequate recovery. Recurrent mechanical stress may lead to microstructural damage involving tendons, bones, cartilage, ligaments, and surrounding soft tissues. Overhead athletes, runners, and jumping athletes are particularly susceptible to chronic overload syndromes, including rotator cuff tendinopathy, patellar tendinopathy, Achilles tendinopathy, and stress fractures. Intrinsic biomechanical abnormalities, kinetic chain dysfunction, excessive workload, and insufficient recovery contribute substantially to injury development. Magnetic resonance imaging and musculoskeletal ultrasound play essential roles in early diagnosis and treatment planning. Current management strategies emphasize rehabilitation, workload modification, neuromuscular training, and biologic therapies. Early recognition and multidisciplinary management are essential for optimizing athlete health and return-to-play outcomes.
