Advanced Practice Provider-Led Cardioversion Program: Improving Access, Autonomy, Safety, and Efficiency

Background:
At the University of Virginia, electrical cardioversions were traditionally performed by cardiologists and electrophysiologists, limiting timely access due to competing clinical responsibilities. To improve access and scheduling efficiency, University of Virginia Health implemented an Advanced Practice Provider (APP)-led cardioversion program.
Project Rationale:
The objective of this initiative was to develop and implement an APP-led cardioversion (CV) model that improves patient access to CV procedures, enhances electrophysiology lab efficiency and throughput, and expands APP procedural competency while maintaining patient safety and satisfaction.
Project Summary:
A multidisciplinary team developed a structured training and competency pathway that enabled APPs to safely perform electrical CVs independently following physician-supervised training and credentialing.

Innovative care delivery models that leverage APPs at the top of their scope of practice promote interdisciplinary collaboration, improve patient access and satisfaction, enhance operational efficiency, and support professional growth among APPs.
