    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate respiratory symptoms and lung function in welders compared to controls.

    • 119 welders and 90 matched controls underwent respiratory symptom questionnaires and spirometry.
    • Nitrogen closing volume tests were performed.
    • Twenty-one non-smoking welders were monitored for short-term changes.

    • No significant short-term lung function changes were observed in non-smoking welders.

    • Welding fume exposure may lead to peripheral airway changes, even in non-smokers.
    • Findings suggest particle deposition in small airways or alveoli.
    • Smoking status influences the observed lung function alterations.
