    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the metabolic effects of two sodium fluoride (F) doses (20 and 45 mg) on calcium (Ca) and F metabolism in osteoporosis patients.
    • To evaluate the effect of a 45-mg F dose on Ca and F metabolism in Paget's disease patients.

    Main Methods:

    • Patients with osteoporosis received 20 or 45 mg of sodium fluoride, while Paget's disease patients received 45 mg.
    • Metabolic effects were assessed by measuring F retention, urinary and fecal Ca excretion, and 47Ca absorption over 3 months.

    • A 3-month course of fluoride therapy may provide long-lasting relief from bone condition symptoms.
