Fluorescence angiography revealed blood vessels within persistent pupillary membrane remnants in a patient. Dye leakage from these remnants and the iris sphincter pupillae capillary network were observed.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Vascular Imaging
    • Anatomy

    Background:

    • Persistent pupillary membrane (PPM) is a congenital condition where remnants of fetal iridopupillary tissue remain.
    • Iris vascular abnormalities can be challenging to visualize and assess.

    Observation:

    • Fluorescence angiography was performed on iris vessels in a 52-year-old female patient.
    • Blood-containing vessels were identified within thread-like remnants of a persistent pupillary membrane.

    Findings:

    • Diffuse dye leakage occurred from both free-floating PPM remnants and those attached to the anterior lens capsule.
    • A diffuse fluorescence pattern was noted in the capillary network of the sphincter pupillae at the pupillary margin.
    • The remaining iris vasculature exhibited a normal angiographical appearance.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Implications:

    • This case highlights the potential vascularization and leakage associated with persistent pupillary membrane remnants.
    • Fluorescence angiography is a valuable tool for evaluating subtle iris vascular abnormalities.
    • Understanding these vascular patterns may inform the management of related ocular conditions.
