Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Recurrent acute pancreatitis is often linked to pancreas divisum.
  • Pancreas divisum causes inflammation through obstructed pancreatic secretions in the dorsal duct.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of operative treatment for recurrent acute pancreatitis associated with pancreas divisum.
  • To determine the importance of patient selection for successful surgical intervention.

Main Methods:

  • Transduodenal dorsal duct sphincterotomy was performed.
  • Precise surgical technique is essential for this procedure.

Main Results:

  • Operative treatment can lead to long-term freedom from recurrent pancreatitis attacks.
  • Successful outcomes depend on careful patient selection.

Conclusions:

  • Surgical intervention, particularly dorsal duct sphincterotomy, is an effective treatment for selected patients with pancreas divisum-related recurrent acute pancreatitis.
  • Achieving long-term success requires meticulous surgical execution and appropriate patient selection.
