Summary

Patients experiencing ischemic stroke often develop long-lasting autonomic dysfunction, leading to decreased skin temperature in limbs contralateral to the stroke. This temperature asymmetry correlates with neurological deficits and specific stroke syndromes.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To prospectively evaluate cutaneous temperature changes in patients following ischemic stroke.
  • To investigate the long-term effects of ischemic stroke on autonomic thermoregulation.
  • To clarify the relationship between stroke-induced autonomic dysfunction and skin temperature alterations.

Main Methods:

  • Skin temperature was measured bilaterally at five body sites in 44 hemispheric infarction and 19 brain stem infarction patients.

    • Stroke-induced autonomic dysfunction significantly impacts peripheral thermoregulation, manifesting as long-lasting temperature asymmetry.
