Adenovirus infections can affect the parotid gland in individuals with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Clinicians should consider adenovirus as a cause of parotid swelling in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients.
Area of Science:
- Virology
- Immunology
- Infectious Diseases
Background:
- Adenoviruses are recognized opportunistic pathogens, particularly in immunocompromised individuals.
- Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is a significant risk factor for opportunistic infections.
Observation:
- Two patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) presented with parotid gland swelling.
- Diagnostic investigations included viral cultures and electron microscopy of parotid tissue.
Findings:
- Both cases confirmed adenovirus infection of the parotid gland.
- Viral cultures and electron microscopy provided etiological evidence.
Implications:
- Adenovirus infection should be included in the differential diagnosis of parotid swelling in HIV-infected patients.
- Highlights the importance of considering specific opportunistic infections in immunocompromised populations.
