Abstract:
Non-squamous malignancies of the larynx are extremely rare, usually subsurface in origin and mostly diagnosed only in an advanced stage. Two cases representative of this group are described, namely, an adenoid cystic carcinoma and a pleomorphic rhabdomyosarcoma. The clinicopathological data of these unusual tumours are presented and the current therapeutic modalities discussed. The diagnostic value of MRI with contrast medium is emphasised by demonstrating an otherwise not recognised far advanced tumour stage. The pleomorphic rhabdomyosarcoma was also examined via electron microscopy.
