Abstract:
Inferior and middle meatal antrostomy have been used for over a century in the treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis. The historical, pathophysiological and clinical aspects of the two approaches are discussed to compare the advantages and disadvantages of each. Whilst surgery in the inferior meatus is relatively safe, it does not address the underlying pathophysiology of the condition in contrast to achieving maxillary ostial function which consequently offers better surgical results.
