Update on laboratory diagnosis of sexually transmitted diseases
1Department of Pathology, University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, USA.
Abstract:
Several new techniques for diagnosis of the sexually transmitted diseases commonly seen in the United States have been developed during the past decade. The rapid, nonculture techniques for direct detection of Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and herpes simplex virus are reviewed, and their advantages and disadvantages are compared with conventional diagnostic methods. In addition, new tests for diagnosis of syphilis, vaginitis, and vaginosis are briefly discussed.
