Summary

This study introduces a new animal model for maxillary sinus floor augmentation. Recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) on absorbable collagen sponge (ACS) successfully promoted bone formation, unlike control implants.

Area of Science:

  • Biomaterials Science
  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Regenerative Medicine

Background:

  • Maxillary sinus floor augmentation is crucial for dental implant placement.
  • Traditional grafting methods have limitations.
  • Novel biomaterials are needed to enhance bone regeneration.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To establish and validate a novel animal model for evaluating maxillary sinus floor augmentation.
  • To assess the efficacy of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) delivered via absorbable collagen sponge (ACS) for bone formation in this model.

Main Methods:

  • A novel animal model was developed for maxillary sinus floor augmentation.
  • rhBMP-2/ACS implants were tested against buffer/ACS controls.
  • Evaluations included computerized tomography, physical, hematologic, gross pathologic, and histologic analyses over 12 weeks.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • rhBMP-2/ACS implants demonstrated sustained size and time-dependent mineralization.
  • Control implants showed no mineralization and were resorbed within 4 weeks.
  • The animal model proved effective and complication-free.

Conclusions:

  • The novel animal model is suitable for assessing bone formation in sinus augmentation.
  • rhBMP-2/ACS implants show significant potential for promoting bone regeneration.
  • rhBMP-2/ACS implants represent a promising alternative to traditional bone grafting techniques.
