Update to: Study Pre-protocol for “BronchStart – The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Timing, Age and Severity of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Emergency Presentations; a Multi-Centre Prospective Observational Cohort Study”
BACKGROUND In 2021 we launched the BronchStart study, which collected information on 17,899 presentations in children with serious respiratory tract infections following the release of lockdown restrictions. Our study informed the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation’s decision to recommend the introduction maternal respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccination, which was introduced in the United Kingdom…

Mechanistic Insight into the Formation and Deposition of Conductive, Layered Metal-Organic Framework Nanocrystals
This paper describes the use of the layered conductive metal-organic framework (MOF) (nickel)-(hexahydroxytriphenylene) [Ni(HHTP)] as a model system for understanding the process of self-assembly within this class of materials. We confirm and quantify experimentally the role of the oxidant in the synthetic process. Monitoring the deposition of Ni(HHTP) with infrared spectroscopy revealed that MOF formation…

Speciation and Aqueous Dissolution of Macronutrients in Fire Ash: Variation across Ecosystems and the Effects on Nutrient Cycling
This study investigated the speciation and aqueous dissolution of macronutrients in fire ash from diverse ecosystems and speciation of ash and smoke from laboratory burning, exploring the variations and their causes. The speciation of phosphorus (P), calcium (Ca), and potassium (K) in fire ash from five globally distributed ecosystems was characterized by using X-ray absorption…

Visible-Light-Absorbing Photosensitizer Nanostructures for Treatment of Pathogenic Bacteria and Induction of Systemic Acquired Resistance
Induction of systemic acquired resistance (SAR) in plants to control bacterial diseases has become an effective solution to the problems of agrochemical resistance and ecological environment damage caused by long-term and large-scale use of traditional bactericides. However, current SAR-inducing compounds are often unable to rapidly eliminate pathogenic bacteria in infected plant tissues to prevent further…

Atomic Decompositions of Periodic Electronic-Structure Simulations
We present a new theory for partitioning simulations of periodic and solid-state systems into physically sound atomic contributions at the level of Kohn-Sham density functional theory. Our theory is based on spatially localized linear combinations of crystalline Gaussian-type orbitals and, as such, capable of exposing local features within periodic electronic structures in a more intuitive…

In Vitro and In-Silico Assessment of Gaussian Curvature-driven Internalization Kinetics of Nanoparticles
Nanoparticles have been of significant interest in various biomedical domains such as drug delivery, gene delivery, cytotoxicity analysis, and imaging. Despite the synthesis of a variety of nanoparticles, their cellular uptake efficiency remains a substantial obstacle, with only a small fraction of delivered nanoparticles (NPs) have been reported to traverse the cell membrane within 24…

Unraveling Serial Degradation Pathways of Supported Catalysts through Reliable Electrochemical Liquid-Cell TEM Analysis
Electrochemical liquid-cell transmission electron microscopy (e-LCTEM) offers great potential for investigating the structural dynamics of nanomaterials during electrochemical reactions. However, challenges arise from the difficulty in achieving the optimal electrolyte thickness, leading to inconsistent electrochemical responses and limited spatial resolution. In this study, we present advanced e-LCTEM techniques tailored for tracking Pt/C degradation under electrochemical…

Solvent-Free Chemical Recycling of Polyesters and Polycarbonates by Magnesium-Based Lewis Acid Catalyst
Developing a simple and efficient catalyst system for closed-loop recycling of polymers to monomers is an essentially important but challenging task for the recycle of polymer wastes and preventing the downcycle of plastic products. Herein, we employ inexpensive, commercially available Lewis acids (LAs) to achieve closed-loop recycling in bulk through the catalytic depolymerization of aliphatic…

Using a Social Network Approach to Characterize Oral Health Behavior Social Support Among Mexican-Origin Young Adults
Using a social network approach, we characterize who Mexican-origin young adults perceive as social support sources for oral health behaviors and provide additional validity evidence for Oral Health Behavior Social Support Scales (OHBSS). From April to September 2022, we gathered social network data from 62 Mexican-origin adults (21-40 years old) through Zoom interviews about their perceived…

Non-V600E BRAF mutations and treatment for Hairy Cell Leukemia
We found 18 patients with immunophenotype consistent with classic hairy cell leukemia (HCL) and BRAF mutations other than just V600E. Twelve had 1 non-V600E BRAF mutation and 6 had V600E with 1 (n=5) or 2 (n=1) non-V600E BRAF co-mutations.
