Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Idiopathic serous macular detachment (ISMD) is a rare condition with various potential etiologies.
  • Sildenafil (Viagra) is a potent vasodilator used for erectile dysfunction.

Observation:

  • Two patients presented with ISMD coincident with Sildenafil use.
  • Ocular examinations included OCT, fundus photography, FA, ICG, and B-scan ultrasonography.
  • Extensive systemic workup ruled out other causes for the macular detachments.

Findings:

  • OCT revealed large serous macular detachments associated with Sildenafil use.
  • Discontinuation of Sildenafil resulted in resolution or improvement of the detachment.
  • Recurrence of ISMD was noted upon resuming Sildenafil.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Sildenafil may be an etiological factor in some cases of idiopathic serous macular detachment.
  • OCT is crucial for diagnosing and monitoring these detachments.
  • Clinicians should consider Sildenafil use in patients presenting with unexplained serous macular detachments.
