Genetic variants in cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) may be linked to longevity syndrome (LS), characterized by high HDL cholesterol. The TaqIB B2 allele was more frequent in LS individuals, suggesting a genetic component to this longevity trait.
Area of Science:
- Cardiovascular Genetics
- Lipid Metabolism
- Longevity Research
Background:
- High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol is inversely correlated with coronary heart disease (CHD) risk.
- Longevity syndrome (LS) may be characterized by elevated HDL and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels.
- Cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) influences HDL particle composition and function.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between two cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) gene polymorphisms (TaqIB and I405V) and longevity syndrome (LS).
- To determine if specific CETP genotypes contribute to the development of LS, a state of high HDL cholesterol.
Main Methods:
- A case-control study involving 136 unrelated individuals without a history of CHD.
- Participants were categorized into LS (n=69) and non-LS (n=67) groups based on HDL cholesterol levels.
- Genotyping was performed for TaqIB and I405V polymorphisms within the CETP gene.
Main Results:
- The frequency of the B2 allele for the TaqIB polymorphism was significantly higher in the LS group compared to the non-LS group (p=0.03).
- Conversely, the B1 allele frequency was higher in the non-LS group (p=0.03).
Conclusions:
- CETP gene polymorphisms, specifically TaqIB, may be associated with longevity syndrome.
- Favorable gene polymorphisms, in conjunction with very high HDL cholesterol, could be prerequisites for LS.
- Further research with larger cohorts and additional genetic markers is warranted to confirm these findings.
