Wavefront-guided and wavefront-optimized LASIK offer comparable outcomes for myopia. Wavefront-guided LASIK may be superior for patients with higher preoperative aberrations, improving postoperative visual quality.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Refractive Surgery
- Corneal Surgery
Background:
- Laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is a common procedure for myopia correction.
- Wavefront technology aims to improve visual outcomes by analyzing individual eye aberrations.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare clinical outcomes between wavefront-guided LASIK and wavefront-optimized LASIK for myopia treatment.
- To evaluate differences in visual acuity, refractive accuracy, and higher-order aberrations.
Main Methods:
- A meta-analysis of seven studies involving 930 eyes was conducted.
- Literature search included Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, and EMBASE.
- Statistical analysis was performed using RevMan 5.0 software.
Main Results:
- No significant differences were found in achieving 20/20 or better uncorrected visual acuity or refractive targets within ±0.50 D.
- No patients lost two or more lines of corrected distance visual acuity.
- Wavefront-guided LASIK showed a significantly better postoperative aberration profile in patients with preoperative higher-order aberrations >0.3 μm RMS.
Conclusions:
- Both wavefront-guided and wavefront-optimized LASIK demonstrate excellent efficacy, safety, and predictability.
- Wavefront-guided LASIK may be preferable for patients with higher preoperative higher-order aberrations (>0.3 μm RMS).
