Anatomy of the Brain: Ventricles01:18

Anatomy of the Brain: Ventricles

12.0K
There are hollow fluid-filled cavities known as ventricles deep inside the human brain. There are two lateral ventricles, one in each cerebral hemisphere, and each has three different projections — the anterior, inferior, and posterior horns visible from the lateral side. A thin membrane called the septum pellucidum separates the two lateral ventricles. The slender third ventricle in the diencephalon is connected to each lateral ventricle via a channel called the interventricular foramen.

Neuron Structure

22.4K
Neurons are the main type of cell in the nervous system that generate and transmit electrochemical signals. They primarily communicate with each other using neurotransmitters at specific junctions called synapses. Neurons come in many shapes that often relate to their function, but most share three main structures: an axon and dendrites that extend out from a cell body.

Nervous Tissue: Glial Cells

13.0K
Glia, or neuroglia, are vital support cells that assist neurons in their functions. The term "glia" originates from the Greek word for "glue," reflecting their role in holding the nervous system together. These cells can be categorized into six types: four in the central nervous system (CNS) and two in the peripheral nervous system (PNS).
The CNS glial cell includes the astrocytes, the oligodendrocytes, the microglia, and the ependymal cells.
Astrocytes are star-shaped glial...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Extraventricular neurocytomas (EVNs) are rare brain tumors often found in the cerebral hemispheres. Due to their aggressive nature and location, EVNs present a poor prognosis, with limited understanding of their epidemiology and treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Neuro-oncology
  • Neurosurgery
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Extraventricular neurocytomas (EVNs) are rare neoplasms sharing features with central neurocytomas.
  • EVNs occur in diverse locations, predominantly within the cerebral hemispheres.
  • These tumors exhibit significant variability in morphology, cellularity, and proliferation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the current understanding of extraventricular neurocytomas (EVNs).
  • To cover epidemiology, clinical presentation, radiological findings, treatment, and prognosis of EVNs.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of extraventricular neurocytomas.
  • Synthesis of data on epidemiology, clinical presentation, imaging, and treatment outcomes.

Main Results:

  • EVNs are rare, morphologically variable neoplasms primarily in the cerebral hemispheres.
  • Aggressive behavior and location in eloquent areas contribute to a poorer prognosis.
  • Epidemiology and optimal treatment strategies for EVNs remain largely undefined.

Conclusions:

  • Extraventricular neurocytomas represent a challenging group of rare brain tumors.
  • Further research is needed to elucidate EVN epidemiology and establish effective treatments.
  • Understanding EVN characteristics is crucial for improving patient outcomes.
