Risk assessment tools for sexual violence can be improved by identifying psychological constructs. Analyzing Static-99R and Static-2002R revealed three factors predicting recidivism, suggesting a shift towards meaningful assessments.
Area of Science:
- Forensic Psychology
- Criminology
- Psychometrics
Background:
- Current sexual violence risk assessment tools primarily use static, historical factors, limiting their utility for treatment planning.
- These tools are often criticized for lacking direct links to psychological characteristics of offenders.
- A need exists to bridge the gap between historical risk markers and actionable psychological insights.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the underlying psychological constructs within commonly used sexual offender risk assessment tools.
- To determine if these identified constructs predict sexual and nonsexual recidivism.
- To advocate for a move towards psychologically meaningful assessments in risk prediction.
Main Methods:
- Factor analysis was performed on 13 nonredundant items from the Static-99R and Static-2002R risk assessment tools.
- The analysis aimed to identify latent psychological constructs represented by these items.
- The predictive validity of identified constructs for sexual and nonsexual recidivism was examined.
Main Results:
- Three distinct psychological constructs were identified: persistence/paraphilia, youthful stranger aggression, and general criminality.
- All three constructs demonstrated similar accuracy in predicting sexual recidivism.
- Youthful stranger aggression and general criminality uniquely predicted nonsexual recidivism.
Conclusions:
- Sexual offender risk assessment tools are multidimensional, containing valuable psychological information.
- A shift from atheoretical risk markers to the assessment of psychologically meaningful constructs is supported.
- This approach can enhance the utility of risk assessment for informing treatment and evaluating change.
