Milestones for Cosmetic Dermatologic Surgery (CDS) fellowship training have been developed. These standardized achievement levels will aid in assessing fellow performance during residency.
Area of Science:
- Medical Education
- Surgical Training
- Dermatology
Background:
- The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) promotes "milestones" for assessing resident performance.
- Milestones are standardized achievement levels tied to specific time points in postgraduate training.
Purpose of the Study:
- To create a dedicated milestones document for the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) Cosmetic Dermatologic Surgery (CDS) fellowship program.
- To enhance the evaluation of fellows in cosmetic dermatologic surgery.
Main Methods:
- An ad hoc committee with ASDS Accreditation Work Group members and program directors drafted the milestones.
- Multiple rounds of email circulation and consensus-building were used to finalize the document.
Main Results:
- Thirteen milestones were established within the 6 ACGME competency areas, including 8 patient-care milestones.
- Specific administrative guidelines for the CDS fellowship were approved.
- Semiannual milestone implementation was planned for the July 2018 fellowship cohort.
Conclusions:
- Milestones are now available for CDS fellowship directors.
- These milestones can be integrated with existing evaluation tools for comprehensive fellow assessment.
