Modeling in Therapy01:26

Modeling in Therapy

164
Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.

Family Therapy

165
Family therapy conceptualizes psychological challenges as arising from dysfunctional interactions within the family unit, rather than as isolated issues within individuals. This approach seeks to address and transform the patterns of communication, roles, and relationships within families to promote healthier dynamics and emotional well-being for all members.

Area of Science:

  • Behavioral analysis
  • Autism spectrum disorder research
  • Telehealth applications in psychology

Background:

  • Trial-based functional analysis (TBFA) is an effective method for identifying behavior-maintaining consequences in natural settings.
  • Previous TBFA training relied on in-person methods, limiting accessibility.
  • The efficacy of telehealth coaching for TBFA implementation by parents was previously unevaluated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of telehealth coaching in training parents to conduct TBFA.
  • To assess if parents can identify maintaining consequences for challenging behaviors using TBFA via telehealth.
  • To determine if telehealth-supported TBFA can inform effective interventions.

Main Methods:

  • Three mothers of children with autism were coached remotely to conduct TBFA in their homes.
  • Functional communication training (FCT) interventions were developed based on TBFA findings.
  • Mothers were coached via telehealth to implement the FCT interventions.

Main Results:

  • TBFA successfully identified consequences maintaining challenging behaviors for all three participants.
  • All implemented FCT interventions led to a reduction in challenging behavior.
  • Children demonstrated increased communication skills following the interventions.

Conclusions:

  • Parents can be effectively trained to conduct valid TBFA using telehealth coaching.
  • Telehealth coaching is a viable method for supporting parent-led behavioral analysis and intervention.
  • This approach enhances ecological validity and accessibility of behavioral support for autism.
