Abstract:
Bruxism is an oral parafunction characterized by the involuntary clenching or grinding of the teeth during sleep or daytime. Among the risk factors, the use of certain medications or stimulants should be taken into consideration. Bruxism is regulated by complex neurophysiological mechanisms involving different neuromediators which represent the therapeutic target of several drugs. Antipsychotics and SSRI-type antidepressants are the most at risk of promoting the onset of bruxism. Psychiatrists and other physicians should be aware of this possibility in order to warn their patients and refer them to a dentist if necessary. Addictologists must also be aware of the existence of these risks in subjects who use drugs, in whom bruxism is a common side effect.
