Background:
Standardized patient (SP) use in prelicensure nursing education is largely under-studied, and the existing research surrounding the efficacy of simulation education for student learning does not fully encompass the perspective of nursing faculty working alongside SPs in the simulated clinical education setting.
Method:
A mixed-methods study was conducted to explore the experiences of nursing faculty working with SPs in simulation. This study aimed to explore their experiences and perceptions as well as to better understand the connection between the concepts within faculty-SP teamwork and student outcomes.
Results:
Statistically significant correlations were found between components of the faculty-SP teamwork and student outcomes. Faculty reported an overwhelmingly positive experience working with SPs in simulation as well as barriers for enhanced use in their programs.
Conclusion:
The findings of this study have important implications for simulated-based learning and SP-based simulation, contributing valuable knowledge to the field and setting the stage for informed decision-making and innovative solutions.
