Abstract:
Orchid seeds cannot germinate without help from fungi. This commentary features a recent study showing that Cremastra appendiculata seeds release two small compounds that attract a helpful fungus and also serve as food for it. This suggests that plants may recruit fungal partners before contact by offering edible chemical cues to nearby fungi.
