Background:

The Summer Geriatric Extern Program was established in 2004.
It targets nursing students between their junior and senior years.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the effectiveness of the Summer Geriatric Extern Program.
To assess its impact on students' interest in geriatric nursing careers and exposure to research and faculty roles.

Main Methods:

A full-time, eight-week externship was offered.
Externs received a stipend and faculty mentorship.

Main Results:

Since its inception, 24 externs have participated.
Seven participants have since enrolled in graduate programs.
The program demonstrated success in fostering interest in geriatric nursing.

Conclusions:

The externship program is effective in promoting geriatric nursing as a career path.
It provides valuable exposure to nursing research and the academic faculty role.
