    Background:

    • Mentors play a crucial role in medical trainees' career development and psychosocial well-being.
    • However, not all trainees benefit from mentorship opportunities.
    • This study addresses the need to optimize mentor engagement in training programs.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the effectiveness of two interventions designed to increase mentor availability for medical trainees.
    • To assess differences in mentor effectiveness across intervention groups.
    • To examine the relationship between mentorship, trainee satisfaction, and postgraduate year (PGY).

    Main Methods:

    • Intervention group 1: Physician adviser-led mentorship implementation in 6 residency programs.
    • Intervention group 2: Training program with dedicated, funded physician mentoring time.
    • Control group: 89 training programs without specific mentorship interventions. Chi-square tests were used for analysis.

    Main Results:

    • Interventions increased the percentage of trainees reporting a mentor (89% and 97% vs. 79% in controls, P=.01).
    • No significant differences in mentor effectiveness were found between groups.
    • Mentored trainees reported higher satisfaction with their programs (P=.01) and greater faculty support for professional aspirations (P=.001).
    • Fewer first-year trainees (59%) had mentors compared to PGY-2 to PGY-8 trainees (84%, P<.001).

    Conclusions:

    • Supported mentorship programs effectively enhance trainees' perception of mentorship.
    • These programs improve trainee satisfaction with their educational programs.
    • Structured support for mentorship is key to fostering a positive learning environment.
