Mindful hypnotherapy (MH) effectively reduced stress and increased mindfulness in college students. The intervention demonstrated excellent feasibility, with high satisfaction and adherence rates.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Clinical Psychology
- Mind-Body Interventions
Background:
- Elevated stress is a significant concern among college-age populations.
- Mindfulness-based interventions show promise for stress reduction.
- Hypnotherapy is an under-explored modality for psychological well-being.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the feasibility of a mindful hypnotherapy (MH) intervention for stress reduction.
- To assess the impact of MH on perceived distress and mindfulness levels.
- To evaluate participant satisfaction, adherence, and adverse events associated with MH.
Main Methods:
- A randomized trial involving 42 college-age participants with elevated stress.
- Participants were assigned to either an 8-week mindful hypnotherapy intervention or a wait-list control group.
- The MH intervention included weekly individual sessions and daily self-hypnosis audio recordings.
Main Results:
- Mindful hypnotherapy (MH) demonstrated excellent feasibility, evidenced by high participant satisfaction and an 84% adherence rate.
- A significant and large decrease in perceived distress was observed in the MH group (Hedge's g = -1.14, p < .001).
- The MH intervention led to a significant and large increase in mindfulness levels (Hedge's g = 1.36, p < .001).
Conclusions:
- Mindful hypnotherapy (MH) is a feasible and effective intervention for reducing stress in college students.
- MH significantly enhances mindfulness and decreases perceived distress.
- This study supports the integration of MH into mental health strategies for young adults.
