Types of Selection01:46

Types of Selection

40.8K
Natural selection influences the frequencies of particular alleles and phenotypes within populations in several different ways. Primarily, natural selection can be directional, stabilizing, or disruptive. Directional selection favors one extreme trait and shifts the population towards that phenotype while selecting against individuals displaying alternate traits. Stabilizing selection favors an intermediate trait with a narrow range of variation. Deviation from the optimal phenotype towards an...

Guidelines for Writing Outcome01:11

Guidelines for Writing Outcome

2.8K
When developing expected outcomes for a patient care plan, the nurse should adhere to the following recommendations:
Patient outcomes reflect the patient's response to the goal rather than what the nurse aims to achieve. Terminology should be observable and measurable to avoid the reader's interpretation. The desired outcome should be realistic and achievable in the designated care timeframe. Expected outcomes should align with adjunctive therapies. The outcome should enhance care...

The Scientific Method01:32

The Scientific Method

227.8K
The scientific method is a detailed, empirical problem-solving process used by biologists and other scientists. This iterative approach involves formulating a question based on observation, developing a testable potential explanation for the observation (called a hypothesis), making and testing predictions based on the hypothesis, and using the findings to create new hypotheses and predictions.
Generally, predictions are tested using carefully-designed experiments. Based on the outcome of these...

Feedback Loops01:01

Feedback Loops

57.8K
In most cases, excessive hormone production is prevented by negative feedback—a loop that starts with a stimulus inducing the release of a particular substance, like a hormone, to maintain a certain level before triggering a signal that results in a decrease in further release of the hormone.

Sustainable Development01:43

Sustainable Development

13.4K
As the human population continues to grow and use resources, we must be mindful of our planet’s natural limits. Sustainable development provides a pathway to maintain and improve human life now while also ensuring that future generations will have the resources that they need. The long-term success of sustainability efforts rests on understanding the interplay between human actions and ecological systems.

Area of Science:

  • Scholarly communication
  • Peer review process
  • Academic publishing

Background:

  • The peer review process is critical for advancing nursing education research.
  • Effective peer review underpins the integrity of scientific literature.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine development strategies for preparing peer reviewers.
  • To critically appraise the content of manuscripts submitted to peer-reviewed journals.

Main Methods:

  • A scoping review was conducted using Joanna Briggs Institute procedures.
  • Searched five databases for English-language articles from 2012-2022.
  • Included articles focused on strategies for developing journal peer reviewers.

Main Results:

  • 44 articles were included, predominantly commentaries (52%).
  • Most articles were from medicine (61%), followed by nursing (9%) and multidisciplinary journals (9%).
  • Reviewer development strategies clustered into pedagogical approaches, resources, and personal practices.

Conclusions:

  • Multiple disciplines have addressed reviewer development, but a comprehensive approach is lacking.
  • Findings suggest a need for a multilevel reviewer development program.
  • Academic nurse educators can lead the development of such programs.
