A father
Area of Science:
Environmental Health
Toxicology
Public Health
Background:
Household alchemy practices involving toxic metals like mercury pose significant health risks.
Mercury poisoning can occur through various exposure routes, including contaminated cookware.
Observation:
A family continued to use an iron pot for cooking, which was also used for mercury and lead alchemy.
Despite the mother's death from mercury poisoning and high mercury levels in daughters' urine, the father initially refused further examination.
Nine months later, the daughters presented with persistent high mercury deposition in hair and kidneys, despite normalized blood levels.
Findings:
Urinary mercury levels in the daughters were significantly elevated compared to controls (322-455 µg/L vs. 1-10 µg/L).
